Project Summary
The “Blue Forests of Zanzibar” project aims to revitalize and empower coastal communities in Zanzibar
by establishing sustainable, climate-smart seaweed farming systems. This initiative leverages the power
of seaweed—nature’s marine forest—as a tool for climate change mitigation, poverty alleviation, women’s
economic empowerment, and marine biodiversity conservation. By equipping local seaweed farmers with
innovative techniques and tools, we will boost livelihoods while restoring marine ecosystems and
sequestering carbon naturally.
Project Objectives
- Enhance Livelihoods: Increase income and food security for at least 600
seaweed farmers (70% women) in Unguja and Pemba Islands through sustainable seaweed
farming.
- Climate Resilience: Promote climate-smart seaweed farming techniques that withstand
rising temperatures and changing ocean conditions.
- Ecosystem Restoration: Enhance marine biodiversity and carbon sequestration through
restoration of native seaweed species and eco-farming practices.
- Community Empowerment: Train and mentor community members in business skills,
cooperative development, and eco-friendly farming innovation.
- Gender Equality: Prioritize women's leadership in decision-making, ownership, and
knowledge-sharing platforms within seaweed value chains.
Key Activities
- Baseline Assessments: Conduct environmental and socio-economic mapping of selected
sites.
- Training Programs: Provide hands-on training in climate-smart seaweed farming,
post-harvest processing, and marine stewardship.
- Farming Infrastructure: Supply eco-friendly farming materials (biodegradable ropes,
floating lines, temperature-resilient seedlings).
- Innovation Labs: Establish 2 Seaweed Innovation Labs (one each in Unguja and Pemba)
for experimentation and value-added production (e.g., cosmetics, bioplastics, fertilizers).
- Market Access Development: Build cooperative business models and digital platforms
for fair trade and international export.
- Monitoring & Evaluation: Implement community-led data collection and
participatory impact tracking for adaptive management.
Expected Impact (3 Years)
- 600+ Farmers trained in sustainable techniques, 70% women-led.
