Building Climate Resilience Through Local Action

Zanzibar is rising to the challenge of climate change with a bold and people-powered Local Adaptation Plan (LAP). Our islands are already feeling the impacts—coastal erosion, rising sea levels, unpredictable rainfall—but together, we’re creating sustainable solutions rooted in our communities and ecosystems.

What is the Local Adaptation Plan (LAP)?

The LAP is Zanzibar’s roadmap for community-led climate resilience. It empowers local voices and traditional knowledge to guide our response to climate threats, with a strong focus on:

  • Environmental protection
  • Water security
  • Coastal and marine ecosystem preservation
  • Climate-smart agriculture
  • Resilient infrastructure and livelihoods

Why Zanzibar? Why Now?

Zanzibar’s beauty is our strength—but also our vulnerability. Climate change threatens:

  • Our coral reefs and marine life
  • The livelihoods of farmers and fishers
  • Freshwater supplies and food security
  • Historic Stone Town and other coastal settlements

Now is the time to adapt locally to protect globally.

Our Environmental Protection Strategy

  • We are taking bold steps to protect the natural environment:
  • Reforesting mangroves and restoring coastal buffers
  • Promoting eco-friendly tourism and waste management
  • Enhancing biodiversity through marine protected areas
  • Supporting community-led conservation projects

Every action we take reduces our climate risks and preserves Zanzibar’s natural heritage.

Community First. Always.

Our plan is not top-down. It's bottom-up—crafted by the people, for the people. From Pemba to Unguja, we are:

  • Conducting local climate risk assessments
  • Training youth and women in green jobs
  • Strengthening traditional knowledge systems
  • Providing tools and funding for grassroots adaptation
