  • From Shoreline to School Line: Bridging Access to Education in Zanzibar
Project Summary

Project Summary:

"From Shoreline to School Line" is a transformative education initiative aimed at eliminating the geographic, economic, and social barriers that hinder thousands of children in coastal Zanzibar from attending school. This project seeks to provide accessible transport, essential learning materials, community engagement, and infrastructure support to ensure that no child is left behind simply because of where they live.

Background and Context:

Zanzibar’s coastal and island communities are rich in culture and history but face acute challenges when it comes to education access. In remote fishing villages and shoreline settlements, children often walk long distances—sometimes more than 5 kilometers—through difficult terrain to reach the nearest school. This discourages attendance, particularly among girls, and contributes to low literacy rates and high dropout rates.

Lack of transportation, inadequate school infrastructure, and economic hardship compound these challenges. Girls are particularly vulnerable, often dropping out early due to safety concerns or cultural expectations. This project recognizes the critical intersection between access, equity, and opportunity.

Goals and Objectives:

The project has four primary goals:

Improve Access to Education

  • Provide safe and reliable transportation (e.g., school boats and bicycles) for 1,000+ students.

Enhance Learning Environments

  • Distribute school supplies, uniforms, and books to underserved children.
  • Upgrade infrastructure in 5 target schools with water, sanitation, and gender-sensitive facilities.

Empower Communities

  • Engage parents and local leaders through education advocacy workshops.
  • Establish local education support committees to encourage sustained attendance.

Ensure Sustainability and Policy Engagement

  • Work with local government and education authorities to align efforts with national goals and long-term policies.

Target Beneficiaries:

  • Direct: 1,200 children aged 6–14 from coastal villages (60% girls)
  • Indirect: 3,000+ family members and 100 teachers/community leaders.
