  • From Soil to Shore: Integrated Agriculture for Island Sustainability

Project Overview

From Soil to Shore is a pioneering sustainability initiative designed to transform island communities through integrated agriculture, regenerative practices, and coastal resource management. This project aims to empower islanders to build food security, climate resilience, and economic independence—by uniting land and marine ecosystems into a harmonious, self-sustaining cycle.

Why It Matters

Island communities face unique challenges: limited arable land, dependency on imported food, climate vulnerability, and rising sea levels. Traditional farming often depletes the land, while overfishing damages coastal ecosystems. From Soil to Shore bridges agriculture and aquaculture with nature-based solutions, creating a replicable model for small islands worldwide.

Project Components

Regenerative Agriculture Training & Demonstration Plots

  • Introduce permaculture, agroforestry, and composting systems.
  • Build demonstration farms showcasing low-input, high-yield techniques.
  • Engage local farmers and youth through hands-on workshops.

Sustainable Aquaculture & Coastal Stewardship

  • Develop small-scale, eco-friendly aquaculture systems (e.g., seaweed, tilapia, shellfish).
  • Train local fisherfolk in reef-friendly practices and marine conservation.
  • Establish community marine protected areas with participatory monitoring.

Soil & Water Health Infrastructure

  • Install rainwater harvesting systems and greywater reuse.
  • Improve soil through composting toilets and biochar production.
  • Launch soil and water testing initiatives for long-term monitoring.

Community Food Hubs & Local Markets

  • Support food co-ops and value-added product development.
  • Create seasonal farmers markets and digital marketplaces.
  • Promote farm-to-table and shore-to-plate businesses, especially for women and youth.

Education & Cultural Revitalization

  • Integrate traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) into training materials.
  • Partner with schools for youth-focused sustainability curriculum.
  • Celebrate food heritage through storytelling, cooking, and festivals.
