  • From Wells to Wellness: Empowering Zanzibar’s Villages with Safe Water Access
Project Summary

Project Summary:

"From Wells to Wellness" is a transformative community-based initiative aimed at enhancing the health, education, and socio-economic well-being of rural communities in Zanzibar by providing sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water. By constructing solar-powered wells and implementing comprehensive WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programs, this project seeks to uplift underserved villages—particularly women and children—by reducing waterborne diseases, improving school attendance, and empowering local ownership of water systems.

Background and Rationale:

Zanzibar, while rich in culture and biodiversity, faces persistent challenges in rural water access. Many villages rely on unsafe surface water sources or shallow, contaminated wells. Women and girls often walk several kilometers daily to fetch water—time that could otherwise be spent on education or income-generating activities. The lack of clean water is directly linked to high rates of diarrhea, cholera, and malnutrition among children.

This project aims to break that cycle—transitioning communities from a state of “water stress” to wellness through sustainable water infrastructure, community engagement, and hygiene education.

Objectives:

  • Construct 10 solar-powered deep boreholes in high-need villages across Zanzibar.
  • Install water storage and filtration systems to ensure safe and continuous water supply.
  • Train 100 local community members, including women, in water system maintenance and management.
  • Implement WASH education programs in 20 local schools and health centers.
  • Improve health outcomes by reducing waterborne disease incidence by 60% in targeted areas.

Key Activities:

Activity Description
Site Selection & Survey Work with local councils and engineers to select and assess suitable drilling sites.
Borehole Drilling Drill 10 deep wells equipped with solar-powered pumps.
Infrastructure Setup Build water tanks, filtration systems, and tap stands for communal use.
Capacity Building Train local Water User Committees (WUCs) on system operation, maintenance, and financial sustainability.
WASH Campaigns Conduct hygiene workshops and distribute educational materials in schools and villages.
Monitoring & Evaluation Monthly data collection on water usage, system performance, and health outcomes.

Expected Impact:

  • Direct beneficiaries: 25,000+ rural residents.
  • Reduced average time spent fetching water: From 3+ hours/day to under 30 minutes.
  • Increased school attendance among girls: 30% increase in 12 months.
  • Improved child health indicators: 60% reduction in waterborne illnesses.
  • Community empowerment: 10 self-managed water committees ensuring sustainability.

Project Timeline:

Duration: 18 months

  • Months 1–3: Planning, site selection, community sensitization
  • Months 4–12: Borehole drilling and infrastructure development
  • Months 13–18: Training, WASH education, M&E, and handover

Sustainability Strategy:

  • Establishment of Community Water Funds to collect small user fees for maintenance.
  • Training of local technicians and water committees to ensure long-term management.
  • Partnerships with local NGOs and government for post-project support and scale-up.

Why Zanzibar? Why Now?

Zanzibar is often overlooked in large-scale development aid despite its urgent water crisis. The region has the potential to be a model for sustainable rural development in East Africa—with the right support. By acting now, we can prevent disease, empower women, boost education, and build resilience against climate change.
