“Hydrating Hope” is a transformative initiative dedicated to addressing the critical water scarcity facing the rural communities of central Zanzibar. Through the integration of sustainable water technologies, community education, and climate-resilient infrastructure, this project seeks to deliver long-term, equitable access to clean and safe drinking water for over 15,000 residents in Zanzibar’s underserved heartland.
Water is life—but for many in Zanzibar’s central regions, safe water remains an unaffordable luxury. Women and children walk up to 6 km daily to fetch water, often from contaminated sources, leading to chronic health issues, missed school days, and entrenched cycles of poverty. “Hydrating Hope” is not just about water—it’s about dignity, opportunity, health, and resilience.
Install 20 solar-powered boreholes and gravity-fed distribution systems to serve villages currently dependent on unsafe water sources.
Introduce sand and ceramic filtration systems, chlorination units, and train local operators for regular monitoring and maintenance.
Establish Water User Committees (WUCs) with gender-balanced leadership and train them on system maintenance, budgeting, and water rights.
Integrate rainwater harvesting in schools and health centers and promote water conservation practices at household levels.
Conduct hygiene and sanitation workshops for 4,000 school children and train 50 community health promoters.
